Love Defined   1 comment

We have considered two terms that look like love few months ago. Let us now consider LOVE.

The Source.
Love has its source. Like lust and evil desire, that have flesh and flesh and the flesh as their own source respectively, Love has God as its own source.

Apostle John puts it this way in his first epistles chapter 4:7-8 thus,
“Behold, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Let me carry out a little re-arrangement of the above verses to bring out some clarity or procedure.

1. Love is of God. Love is His way of dealing with all His creatures. He does everything in love. It was because of love that He gave His only Son to did for the sin of the whole world, John 3:.16. He gave His all in love.

2. That is the reason you became or can become His beloved. In your sorry state of uncleanness, He loves you but hates your sinfulness.
He knows you cannot help yourself, so He sent His only Son to pay the price on your behalf. That is why you become, or can become, His child. The “unloveable” now became the beloved.

3. To be a sincere lover, you must be born of God. You must do things exactly as God will do it. You must be born of God’s spirit.

What do I mean?

You must have the same Spirit of God. Love begins from the spirit realm. It is not attached to the physical things. When you are filled with the Spirit of God, you will then be able to do what God wants you to do the way He wants you to do it.

4. You must know God who is love personified. You cannot be an enemy of God and claim to be a lover. You are either in lust or evil concupiscence.

You must know God and His ways. You must be well rooted in His instructions. You must be ready to obey His Word. You must be ready to live according to His Living Manual, The Holy Bible.

According to Mark 12:30-31, you must love God, your Maker, with the whole of your being.

After this, you must love yourself as a replica of Himself.

You will from there move to loving your neighbors, people you come across, as yourself, wishing them all good things you wish yourself.

I think the testimony of Mike and Bea Edwards, the current owners of www. Faithwriters.com will make this clearer.

In an interview, Mike has this to say about how the duo became husband and wife:
“How did we meet? I was living no a boat in San Diego and got down no my knees and said: ‘God, please bring me a woman who keeps you first.’
Something clicked inside and I knew God agreed. About a week later, bea showed up in my life.
We started a relationship and upon our first disagreement, she said to me, ‘Michael you are not first in my life, God is’
Wow: that is exactly what I prayed for and I had not told her about the prayer. That was also the first time those words had ever come out of her mouth.”

Mike did not state what the disagreement was about, but one thing about every relationship is that there will always be one disagreement or the other.

However, where God is first in the lives of couples, they will do only that thing which pleaseses God, whether they like it or not.

In a relationship where God is first, no weapon fashioned against the people in love will prosper.

In the next piece, by God’s grace, we shall discuss briefly some peculiar attributes of LOVE.
